LEVANIA is a Gothic metal band hailing from Ferrara, Italy. They recently released their second album Renascentis and we, at Subexistance, didn't waste a minute in getting in touch with Still, the band's vocalist and keyboard player, in order to extract some more details about the new release and the future plans of the band. Come meet LEVANIA's very own schizophrenic society in the interview that follows.
Hello Still.Could you start off this interview with a short introduction of the band, info on how the band was formed and the origin of the name for our readers?
Still: Hi, I’m Still and I’m happy and excited to answer your questions! We are Levania, a Gothic metal band that was born in Ferrara (Italy) on March 2007. After many and troubling line-up changes, the band was completed in 2011, and in the same year we’ve recorded the first album Parasynthesis.
The name Levania means “Moon” in the Hebrew language. Nietzsche also speaks of “Levania” in his works. We’ re looking for a name that would express changeability and fickleness. That was ambivalent and the meaning can were part of the light that darkness both.
Which is the current line up?
STILL: This is the current line up: Me(n.d.r STILL ) at Vocals and keyboards; FADE that plays Bass; LIGEIA as Lead vocals; RICHIE that plays Guitar and MOON behind Drum.
What is the major difference between 'Parasynthesis' and 'Renascentis', and what are the major improvements?
Still: For me, Renascentis has accurate and modern sounds, we have worked very hard on arrangements and sounds. Between this two albums, our music has improved with our ideas and we grew up a lot. This album is more “commercial” than the previous one. Parasynthesis was an introspective journey in our minds, and they was foggy and uncomfortable. Parasynthesis is the expression of our solipsism and idiosyncrasies, it’s not easy to listen. Our sophomore album, instead, was written to be listen by everybody, from the granny to the huge fan. We are very happy to have chosen this way through this new album.
Are you 100% happy with your last release "Renascentis” there anything you wish you could change or just take out?
We are very happy with the result of “Renascentis” , we had great attention to details, and no, we don’t change anything. But, It’s not our highest point. I think that Each project should inspire us to create something better. And I feel like we still have a lot to give.
What were the goals you had in mind when you started to record Renascentis, any elements you definitely wanted to have on the album?
Still: Yes, I think we’ve struck our goals. We wanted a nice and “commercial” album, we used a lot of synths and orchestrations, and a very heavy rhythms and guitars. We have the classic elements of Gothic metal (Female voice and Growl/Scream) plus the clean male.
Who was responsible for writing the songs and the lyrics on this album and where do you get your inspiration from? What would you say are the main themes of your lyrics?
Still: Is a question that touches me closely. I'm pretty shy on this point because the instrumental parts are mine for the most, and it isn’t a self-congratulatory response.. I express myself through music almost entirely. After my first composing ideas, I usually present the “embrional song” to my bandmates. After that my bandmates compose and present their ideas about the track. Every idea proposed from each one of us is heard, and each one adds something. Somebody, maybe Fade, maybe Richie, can change parts or propose some changing, and they make their own ideas to create accordance with the newborn song. Every members of Levania has very different musical influences, so our inspiration comes from not listening gothic metal band but listening every kind of music. music can be only in two kinds: good or bad. If our music was born from my own idea and then to become a “choral result” of the entire band, for texts is a different story. Come on, we are MEN(hehheheh)we don’t waste time in words. We delegate all the lyrics part of our singer, Ligeia.
All that aside, we are like a small family. Each of us does what in which he is better able. Would you ever ask your wife to repair the car engine? Here you are.
So we think to do rhythmic, solos and musical structures, but she, who has spent his life on books, think about the vocal lines and lyrics.
Let's also talk about your concerts. How important is concerts for your band? Which song is your favorite one to play live? Which song do you find is the most challenging one to play live?
Still: Thank you for asking. Is a very important thing to discuss. I think that concerts are very important. In reality I think concerts are the MOST important thing for a band. They are a way to promote our album, but also a way to have fun, and growing up 'coz concerts are a source of experiences. Everyone has their favorite song, personally is Seven times to Forget. Each song has its own difficulties, the most challenging for us is Lucretia. she has some hard point because of the changes of the times, and we have to be very focused.
Are third party opinions (press, fans, etc.) on your music important to you? Or your music and band the only things that matter?
Still: The fans are very important for us, we love our fans, they require photos, autographs and we are happy and excited to send them all. Every time that someone asks us a photo, or starts to follow us, or contact us, our singer automatically becomes crazy. She automatically contacts them, so entire Levania’s band can know better our supporters. We would like to know all of them personally, if it were possible we would do! Even the reviews are important, although sometimes they say opposite things. Some exalt us, others make us think, ‘cause maybe find flaws in our work. But we don’t get angry, ahead of the criticism, nor do we feel like we are "arrived" (in Italian is a way to say “be on the top”)in front of compliments. We think that reviews are a great way to grow and improve. You never stop learning, aren’t you? Neither did we.
If you could collaborate with any musician in the world, who would it be?
Our dream is to share a festival with idols of our favorite groups, it is only a dream, but we also work for this. We know each other very well, so I can say that Fade would love to share the stage with Robert Smith of the late lamented Cure; For me, a little dream is share scene with Dany from Cradle of filth, or with Dark Sanctuary; and I can suppose that Richie would like have some gigs with Alter Bridge, or even Amaranthe. Ligeia likes very much Within Temptation….but I don’t know if she has enough corauge…One time she has seen Sharon Den Adel very closely…and she wasn’t able to breath…. So……maybe after the shock ehehe…
Thank you for taking the time to speak to subexistance. Do you have any final words, or anything you would like to add?
