The Eternal Suffering
The Eternal Suffering ia a death/black metal band from Greece which formed in 2001. Aphelian,Ypsailon and Assyrion give an interesting interview to Subexistance.
SubX: Hello guys! Tell me a few things about the creation and the development of The Eternal Suffering?
Ypsailon: We started playing back in 2001 following more traditional thrash and death metal forms, influences that you can experience in our first demo “Born of Chaos”. Shortly after we started composing in a more Black metal oriented fashion which resulted in the sound of our first full length album “In Darkness we shall Reign” .Unfortunately we came to a pause due to military obligations, which lasted about 3 years, though we had the time to evolve and create a more mature and powerful sound as stated in our EP “ApognΩsis”. We used ApognΩsis to test the waters, we signed a deal with “I For An I Records” and thus our first official full length album “Miasma” was unleashed.
SubX: This May was released your new album "Miasma" by I For An I Records, tell me about this.
Aphelian: “Miasma” basically reflects everything the band is about, how we evolved and how we survived over the years. It gives a small taste of what will follow since it contains songs from different periods of the band, but I think we did a good job “re-arranging” the songs so that the different influences/periods blend together in harmony.
SubX: Why did you call the album "Miasma"? What is the content of your lyrics?
Aphelian: “Miasma” is roughly about the downward spiral that mankind follows. The world everyday becomes more of a shithole, people have absolutely no boundaries, they try to sell you everything, from salvation and repentance, to happiness and cures for diseases that don’t even exist. The cover portrays an avatar of pestilence, a sole survivor of the holocaust that will come.
While “Miasma” isn’t a concept album, the lyrics reflect the hate and the disgust about the modern world. Sometimes straightforward, sometimes filtered though “fantasy” they are about the inevitable consequences that will eventually hit us.
SubX: Are you pleased by the response of the people and the reviews of your new album so far?
Assyrion: Personally, I am disappointed by the majority of the reviews from the Greek press. Most people don’t bother writing a proper review, sometimes it feels like they are bored to do so, when the same people claim they support the effort of the domestic scene, while the only thing they do is support the already famous bands regardless of the album they released.
Aphelian: So far everyone seems to like the album. Both the fans and the press gave us really positive feedback but yes, a bit more effort wouldn’t hurt. I can understand that when you got a ton of new albums to review, you can’t always write five-page reviews but some of the reviews out there are pretty awful. And by awful I don’t mean that we didn’t get the rating we expected but it sucks to see a ten-line review which hardly says anything about the album itself.
SubX: You have made a cover of "Iconoclasm Omega" by Dark Fortress. Why this song?
Assyrion: We met Dark Fortress when they first visited Greece and supported them on stage. Being huge fans of their music it was only natural to ask them if it was ok with them to cover Iconoclasm Omega since it fits our music style perfectly and its one of our favorite Dark Fortress songs.
Aphelian: When we first decided to include a Dark Fortress song in “Miasma”, we were between Iconoclasm Omega and Warlord – Face the Angel of Pestilence but eventually we went with Iconoclasm. After all Dark Fortress themselves asked for it!
SubX: Will you make any videoclip to promote "Miasma"?
Ypsailon: There are some plans for a possible videoclip but nothing certain so far. We want to be 100% sure that the result will worth the wait. There is no point in making a music video playing in the forest or in a basement while some random dude edits the same footage of the band performing “live”.
Assyrion: Random dude that can play keyboards?! Haha!
Ypsailon: A good clip would be some sort of a mini-film with a script and a story.
Aphelian: Have you seen the latest Behemoth clips?! Something like that!
SubX: Which are the expectations of The Eternal Suffering?
Aphelian: We are happy when we meet people that enjoy our work. If we keep releasing albums and people still like our music, it’s all good. As stated before, we never saw music as a way to make money or anything, just a way to express our creativity and have a good time. We all have our individual dreams and ambitions but we’ll see how things turn out!
SubX: What are your plans for the near future?
Ypsailon: Our first priority is to promote our album through live performances, ideally supporting a famous band of the genre. Two new members joined the band to help us on stage; we want to make sure that we can support “Miasma” to its full potential.
Aphelian: While live performances are our number one priority at the moment, we already started working on new material. Nothing final, but the new material picks up from where “Miasma” left. We always try to evolve and write more diverse music, the basis for everything will always be traditional Black metal but you never know what the future holds.
SubX: Thank you for your time! Anything else you'd like to say to subexistance readers?
Aphelian: We want to thank everyone that supports us in every way, be it promoting or reviewing our album. Give “Miasma” a chance, we’re pretty sure that you will enjoy it. Feel free to visit our myspace page at: http://www.myspace.com/theeternalsufferingband to check a couple of songs or give us any kind of feedback!
Assyrion: Thank you Subexistance for this opportunity, it is nice to know that there are people that help smaller bands be heard.
Ypsailon: Also, recently the album was released worldwide by Twilight-Vertrieb so it should be much easier to find for our friends outside Greece. If anyone has trouble finding the album, you can always order it online through our record label's webshop: http://iforanirecords.com/onlineshop.html
Hails!
