MONO INC.
On 25th September 2009 the fourth Album Voices of Doom is released including the hit single of the same name. The release sets a milestone in the history of the band as the media and the fans celebrate it likewise. Voices of Doom enters the german Rock and Metal Charts on the day of it’s release and holds it’s place in the top 30 for 10 weeks.Katha Mia gives an interview to subexistance.
Tell us a bit about the genesis of the band, whose idea was it to get things together?
Katha: Mono Inc. was formed in 2000 by Martin, Carl and the first singer of the band. Manuel joined the band in 2003. In 2006 I was visiting a depeche mode show in Aarhus and met Martin, the drummer, in the backstage area. I knew Mono Inc. and asked him, to give me a call, if he would break his arms once playing a concert. In 2007 the band broke up with their singer and Martin the drummer and main songwriter became the new frontman. That was the best thing, that could happened to me, cause on that day, Martin dialed my phone number. Since that day Mono Inc. is:
Martin Engler- vocals
Manuel Antoni- bass/ vocals
Carl Fornia- guitars/ vocals
Katha Mia.- drums/ vocals
When was it that you felt a spark, as it were, for all of you knowing that you had now become a known name in the scene?
Katha: For me it was the WGT in 2009. It was one of the first Festival-show after the tour with Subway to sally. And it was the first time, I recognized so many fans waiting in the rain to see the show of Mono Inc.. There where so many faces I did’nt know and so many hands in the air. It was unbelieveable for me.
In your opinion what makes a band successfull? Is it only hard work?
Katha: I think to be successful, there have to play lots of influenceable and not-influenceable things together. In addition to the hard work of yourself, you need a good-working team „behind the scenes“. I think an important point to become successful is a good relationship inside of this team, so that everyone can feel comfortable on a tour. You need to be thankful and respectful to the other members of your band and your crew. And at last the most important point is a big portion of luck.
In the year 2009 you release one of the best gothic rock albums"Voices of Doom"The comments were amazing like “A masterpiece!” “Irresistable!” and An absolute Must Have!Did this comments scared you somehow?
Katha: Of course not! I think everyone would be very proud to hear such words about their own album. During the writing-process, we never think about the possible reactions of the fans. We’re just doing, what we want to do and the album is finally finished, when everyone of us is satisfied. So it’s a great cognition for us that the fans seem to have the same taste as we have.
Are there certain songs on the album you want to mention or tell something about?
Katha: There’s a concept during the whole album, so I don’t want to mention seperate songs. I’ll just mention my favourite song, the titlesong- Voices of Doom. Every show, I’m just waiting, to hear the first tone of the song, so that we can rock with our fans.
Which are the main themes of your songs? Who writes your lyrics?
All our songtexts are written bei Martin. I like his lyrics, cause they speak right out of his heart, but even so everyone can refer the text on his own life.
How would you describe your musical progress over the years and what direction do you see the music heading into your future releases?
All of us have different roots. While Carl and me like to hear other metalbands, Martin is more the wave-rocker and Manu listens to punk and alternative bands. With all these influences together, you get a new stile, the „Mono-Rock“. ;-)In the last two or three years, we played so many shows, made lots of experiences together and got to know so many interesting persons, bands and new friends and spend most time together on tour. In this time we really grew together and developed further and so Mono Inc. found itself.
We are a live Band and prefer to spend our time on stage that is the words of Martin. What’s the most memorable moment you’ve ever had onstage and which songs from the album will you playing live ? Why did you choose that ones?
Katha: There are two concerts I’ll never forget. The first one was the M’era Luna Festival in 2008. Our stagetime was 11.00 am on a rainy sunday morning. We thought to play a concert in front of at most a handfull people. But after the firsts songs the place in front of the stage was filled with thousends of black-umbrellas. That was a great experience. But I’ve also to mention our first headliner-show in Kaiserslautern. It was great athmosphere and in his unplugged spot Martin sang together with the fans in a sea of flames of all the little lighters and candles of the fans. To see the tears in his eyes, was a memorable moment.I’ll not reveal our setlist from the voices of doom tour. But you can ask me, when all concerts are over. But I can say, that at the moment we try to play a mixture of all our albums at the Mono Inc. shows. During all the festivals this year, we could just play some chosen songs, so now for us it’s a great pleasure to play 2 hours for our fans.
What attracts you in the carrier of a musician?
Katha: I think it’s just playing concerts. We love to play live shows for our fans, especially, when you feel these overwhelming reactions. We have so much fun on stage, so that it became something like a drug, from wich you need more and more.
Accept your second headline tour what is your plans for the near future?A new release maybe?
Katha: At the moment we’re playing the second part of the „Voices of Doom“ tour. After that we’ll support „Unheilig“ on his Jubilee-„Große Freiheit“-Tour in Germany and Austria and finally we’ll finish this great year with our friends of Subway to Sally at the „Eisheilige Nacht“ in Potsdam.Besides we’re working on our new album, which will be released in April 2011.
A message to all your fans and all the people that support the band all these years?
Katha: We want to say „Thank you“ to everyone of you for this great time. We never dreamed, that 2010 would be so succesfull and exciting. We owe a lot to you. Hope to see you soon at a concert.
Thank you very much Katha for your time all the best to Mono Inc.
