Seventh Sin
Gothic / Power metal is what these six musicians stand for with their heart and soul. After recording their self-produced debut "Darkest of all Dreams" at the end of 2006, this band has proven their place in the Dutch metalscene.
Tell us a bit about the genesis of the band, whose idea was it to get things together? Had any of you previous experience in playing with any other acts before this?
Seventh Sin is the result, just like a lot of other bands, of an existing band reinforced with new members. So as a result everyone had some experience before Seventh Sin.But it al got more serious when we started Seventh Sin.
After the release of your first ep "Darkest of all Dreams" you get some very positive reviews like this ""Seventh Sin is a band that I think has the potency to become the next Dutch success in the gothic metal scene"Is this the reason that you preparing your debut for so long time you want to make something unique?
To be honest : no. We had a few cases of really bad timing. First Roelbandmembers (keys) left and was replaced by Vincent. After that multiple had to take it slow for a while for medical reasons. And after that all passed, Sjors left, who is now replaced with Ruben.
Tell me more details about your new full length cd?
We're leaving behind our previous style. The songs so far were medium-tempo and mostly gloomy.Today our music is faster and more energetic, although we're still trying to keep it melodic. And of course it's going to be better than the last one ;)
Which are the main themes of your songs? Who writes your lyrics?
The themes differ. It's really whatever comes up in the moment. What most of the lyrics have in common is that they are about what might happen when things take a turn for the worst. Sometimes it's about war (The Bitter Taste of Victory), sometimes it's about racing (Like A Blazing Flame),or about relationships (Alone Again) or even about suicide (Wings Of Despair. It's really whatever comes up in the moment. Most of the lyrics so far were written by Roel & Roy (DOAD), later with Monique. In the present it's Roy & Ruben who come up with the txt's.
Are there any particular films, books, etc. where you get ideas for your lyrics?
Hmm... haven't tried that one out. Could be a good one for the next song ?
How would you describe your musical sound?
I would describe as a mix between the warm sound of classical gothic and the brutal sound of other genres. because we frequently use grunts. You get a own style of gothic. but you know. it's hard to describe. it's something i always say, you have to make out for your own. people always put their own label on your music.
What are some bands or musical styles that have influenced your music and what are you listening to nowadays?
Every bandmember has his or her own favourite, but it's mostly other female fronted metal bands, some power/heavy metal, some thrash and a little doom.
How is the scene in The Netherlands?
Small. Everywhere you go you see the same few bands and fans. Kinda nice, because it's easier to find the right person but it's also very restricting.
The music business in deep trouble, there's no doubt about that.Illegal downloading is killing smaller record stores and decent small labels are going bankrupt every single day. The sales of physical CD's is falling drastically each year, resulting in bands hardly making any money on their albums, and not only due to the recession of the last years. What's your opinion on all this?
Personally, I think it's a not as bad as the industry is trying to make us believe. Sure they lose a lot of money if everyone would only download cds and not buy them, but on the other hand there are the people who are listening to music using webradio (or downloads ; legal and illegal) and hear a band they normally wouldn't hear, because the band is only know on the other side of the ocean. There are hundreds of webshops who make a decent (or better) living because it's much easier to promote and sell something on the other side of the world. Why should it have to be so much different with music ? Try to find the benefits..
A message to all the people that support you?
Thank you all in advance for waiting so long for new Seventh Sin material. We'll do our utmost to make it worthwhile.
