Svarttjern
Svarttjern is a black metal band from Norway. HaaN gives an interview to Subexistance talking about their new album called “Towards The Ultimate”.
- Hello there! Let’s start with a short rundown about the history of the band.
HaaN: HansFyrste and I formed SVARTTJERN in 2003, as a two- man project. Later the same year Skabb, Fjellnord and Grimdun joined the band making live performances possible. As of today the band consists of the same line-up, except our latest addition Stg V has taken over the bass duties. SVARTTJERN has released two demos, one promo and two full-length albums; “Misanthropic Path of Madness” and “Towards The Ultimate”. The band resides in Oslo, Norway.
-Could you give me some information about your new full-length album called “Towards The Ultimate”?
HaaN: Towards The Ultimate is SVARTTJERN`s second full-length album consisting of 9 blasphemous tracks of TNBM. Released about a month ago on Agonia Records. The album was recorded/mixed and mastered at Strand Studio in Oslo during the summer of 2010.The cover-art was done by Jonathan of Necromantic art.
-Which differences can you point between your debut album “Misanthropic Path of Madness” and your latest “Towards The Ultimate”?
HaaN: Actually many differences at least when considering a debut to a sophomore release, all in all the main points is that Towards The Ultimate contains more aspects to it, especially musical wise, just in general more melodies, slower parts and harmonies etc.
-Are you satisfied by the feedback of your new album?
HaaN: So far very good both from fans and the press, haven`t seen any slaughters yet!
-As metal musician, how do you see the new wave of black metal like Dimmu Borgir, Cradle of filth and Satyricon? How much different is from early 90’s traditional black metal style?
HaaN: As an independent and young musician I do not care and I don`t know. SVARTTJERN have always worked independent of other bands and so-called “famous” metal musicians, this has caused two true albums without interference from others and a personal satisfaction beyond.
In terms of general bm evolvement there has definitely been some, both sound and lyrical aspects have evolved. But hard for me to say that Dimmu and Satyricon belongs to the new wave as they have been there since the start, perhaps developed closer to the new wave, but again, I do not get it, De mysteris has probably more technical things in it that all of the so called old-school bands today combined, and yet that is one of the classics of old school black metal, so the whole discussion makes no sense to me, it is all metal, and yes it is evolving, as all genres, so nothing new there.

-Why did you left your previous label Schwarzdorn Production?
HaaN: Nothing dramatic I am afraid, got a deal from Agonia and saw them as a natural evolvement for the band to take, as they are bigger, but not to big.
-What are your plans for the near future?
HaaN: Hopefully play as much as possible and promote the album as best, so far a few festivals have been booked, but nothing more. Besides live shows I am writing the third album, which are going good, so we will find a suitable time to record that as well. So all in all a few things are planned for the near future.
-Thank you for the interview! The last words belong to you.
HaaN: Thanks for the interview, hope to see as many of you through gigging soon.
