Greek blacksters Erevos return with their debut album ‘Descensus Ad Inferos’ striking the alert and the turning many heads towards their side as their album can easily be compared to those of many great black metal relases that have come out this year. To get things straight, Erevos isn’t your typical black metal band they fuse many elements from differents genres of metal, such as heavy riffage, keyboards and atmospherical passages,  delivering a solid result which can be tagged under the black metal label.

The album kicks off with ‘Adou Katavasis’ and pretty much sums up the whole record as this almost six minute opus contains what Erevos is know for, the heavy, crunching riffs, haunting melodies and melancolic passages all blended with a black metal touch defining the Erevos sound. The chaotic ‘The Omnipotence of the Judges’ is next continuing the mayhem that this band causes with each song. Same with ‘Kires’. Things take a different turn as  we shift through ‘Those Who Decide About Fate’  as the song begins unexpectedly and quite different for a black metal intro, generally the ‘thrashy’ feel is mostly present throughtout the song which is a good thing indeed as erevos mix things a little bit without letting this variety in their sound question their identity as they remain brutal as hell! ‘Adou Anavasis’ is the exact opposite of the opering song as the title states as well, being mostly an outro which reeks dark ambience and some horrific but theatrical atmosphere. To make a long story short, this album ranges across the blackened death metal area with numerous inlfuences here and there, mixed neatly with the identity and the attitude of the band. The guitar riffs are very present and distinct incorporating such heavy parts with some intricate tremolo picking, quite popular in black metal. Also, the vocals are very impressive as  Growler’s deliveries are very expressive and his desperate screams are well performed to say the least. The keyboards are the key thing in Erevos’ sound as they are atmospherical and moody at the same time letting the songs breathe before they come crushing again. The production of ‘Descensus Ad Inferos’ is impressive as well. Firstly beacuse it’s crystal clear and huge, contrary to most traditional black metal releases and because the album is produce d by Dan Swano (Edge of sanity, Bloodbath) in Unisound studios in Sweden who also held mixing and mastering duties offerenig a great result.

All in all, ‘Descensus Ad Inferos’ is a great album, Erevos is ahead of its game with this release which breaths in some fresh air to the black metal releases of today. Check this album out and you will definately won’t be disappointed with this band, Erevos is an antithetical term when it comes to their music!
