Golden Apes - Denying The Towers Our Words Are Falling From...
Echozone is a well known, respected label, specialising in all "dark"music's sub-genres(Electro,Gothic,Industrial to name a few).Golden Apes represent the goth side of the label's roster.Hailing from Germany, they've been around for some time, having released 5 albums so far."Denying The Towers.."is their sixth attempt but also, their first release for Echozone.
Their style of play is gothic rock with an emphasis on guitars.Centered around Peer Lebrecht's baritone vocals,of course.Peer is also the lyricist here, and I have to admit that he did a fine job(check "And Thus He Spoke"for example).
The album has all the potential needed for a good, modern goth rock release:indeed, all the ingredients are here."Liberation(Hieros Gamos)"for example is reminiscent of classic 80's goth cults, such as The Sisters and their peers, adding a british influence to it.The bass is perfect and these guitar melodies stick into my mind..I should say that, generally,I don't like guitar solos that much.In Golden Apes' case though, solos are beautifully crafted, melodic and certainly, not boring."The Mark Of Cain/And From His Heart It Will Rise"is again, based on lovely, crystal clear melodies, while "Invidia"shows a more distant, subtle approach. In any case,Golden Apes is a really tight, concise band.On the other hand they are not re-inventing the will-but does it matter?Certainly not,as their compositions are so well written and performed.
So,naturally,"Denying The Towers"is a very good purchase for goth culture fans,as it manages to merge 80's and 90's influences together, somehow concluding to a contemporary result, though.By all means, very good.
